1960s & 1970s

The shot on the left was taken in July, 1968, at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. I worked at this scout ranch for the summers of 1967 and 1968. During the summer of '68 I had a young Swainson's Hawk and a friend had a young Prairie Falcon. We trained these birds in the sport of falconry. Was I really ever that young? The bird was released later that fall just before I went off to the U.S. military.

Well, this isn't about birding or photography I guess, but I suppose I'll start at the beginning, well, sort of. I became interested in birds initially in the early 1960's as a Boy Scout. In 1969 I joined the U.S. Air Force and became an aircraft loadmaster on C-141's, C-130's and HC-130H models during my 4-year tour. I spent a good bit of time traveling the world during those four years, to scenic places like Viet Nam, Thailand, Japan, Alaska, all over the U.S., Spain, Germany, Ethiopia, Iran, Turkey, England, and other spots. The photo at left was taken in 1972 at Lajes Field in the Azores while I was a crew member on an HC-130H rescue aircraft. I'm the third from the right. I left the air force shortly after this photo was taken. Go to the 1980s page here.
