The African Jacana (Actophilornis africanus) is a member of the rail family. Like jacanas elsewhere, this species has extremely long toes, allowing it to walk lightly across floating vegetation as the individual here is demonstration. Note the toes visible in the 2nd photo. The photos shown here were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II & EF 500mm F/4L IS lens and 2X extender at the Polokwane Bird Reserve near Pietersburg, Limpopo Province, South Africa, in January, 2006.
