The American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)
is a large lizard-like reptile native to fresh and brackish marshes in the southeastern United States. Females are known to grow to about eight feet in length while males can get to eleven or twelve feet, sometimes even longer! It is a powerful predator that is known to eat everything from fish and turtles to animals as large as a deer. The species is a common sight along swamps and marshes in many areas of Texas. The top five shots were taken in coastal Texas with a Canon EOS 3 and a variety of lenses on Fuji Velvia and Sensia during 1999, 2000, and 2001. See below for more recent images.

The images immediately below were taken at Aransas N.W.R., Aransas Co., Texas in November, 2006, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and an EF 70-200 mm F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender. On the 5th shot below note the damselfly resting over the eye of the Alligator.
