The American Golden-Plover (Pluvialis dominica) winters in southern South America and breeds in the high Arctic tundra. During spring migration this species passes through the central United States on its journey north. On the breeding grounds the species has a gold-flecked back, entirely black underparts and broad white patches on the sides of the neck. In early spring migration, however, it is still mostly in winter plumage. The American Golden-Plovers in the top 7 images here were spring migrants which had made a stop in Austin, Travis Co., Texas. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
