The American Snout (Libytheana carinenta) is a very common butterfly across much of the United States and Mexico. The top 9 shots here were all taken in the spring of 2006 in Hidalgo Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and flash.
The snouts in the next two images were resting on a mesquite bean pod.
The American Snout on the left was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in early January, 2003. This represented the first January record for the species in the Austin area, but during mild winters they can be around. The shot was taken with a Canon D60 and an EF 180mm F/3.5 Macro and 2X extender.
