The Arctic Fox (Alopex lagopus) ranges across all of far northern Canada and Alaska. It is brown in the summer and pure white in the winter months. The species often follows Polar Bears across the arctic ice pack where it feeds on the left-overs of the bears. The individual in the top photo was patrolling an area of willow scrub in Churchill, Manitoba in November, 2000. The next three shots show a sleeping Arctic Fox as it keeps a wary eye open to watch for danger, then becoming more alert while watching the human intruder in its domain, then finally showing a lazy yawn. All these images were taken with a Canon EOS 1V and an EF 500 mm F4L IS lens on Fuji Provia 100. The bottom shot is a digital capture in November, 2003, at Churchill. The image was taken with a Canon 10D and EF 70-200 F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender.
