The Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is a common and widespread species across the United States and Mexico. It often nests in old farm buildings, barns, and in Texas, deer blinds. The shot of the adult below was taken in Kenedy Co., Texas, in April, 1998, with a Canon T90 and 400mm F/5.6 lens on Kodachrome 200 film. At right is a shot of a downy nestling Barn Owl inside a deer blind in Kenedy Co., Texas in June, 2002. Below are two shots of young Barn Owls, just about old enough to fledge, taken in this same deer blind two years earlier, in June, 2000. The shots of all the young birds were taken with a Canon EOS 3 camera and an EF 70-200 mm F/2.8 L lens on Fuji Velvia.

The next three shots show a Barn Owl in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos in July, 2007. This bird was roosting on an overheat tree root inside a lava cave. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 L IS lens with flash.
