The Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) is a fairly common shorebird species which breeds in the arctic tundra and winters along all the coasts of the United States and Mexico southward to South America. In breeding plumage the species has entirely black underparts as well as a black face. I don't have any decent images of breeding-plumaged Black-bellied Plovers, so for now I am only posting a few shots of the species in the non breeding season. I hope to add some shots of breeding-plumaged birds when I can. The top shot here was a bird at San Luis Pass, Galveston Co., Texas, in September, 1999. The next two shots were taken on Sanibel Island, Lee Co., Florida, in December, 2000. These three images were all taken with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F/2.8 L lens and 2X extender on Fuji Sensia film.
