The Black-cheeked Woodpecker (Centurus pucherani) occurs on the Atlantic slope of s.e. Mexico to the Honduras and south to Ecuador. The individual shown here was photographed in December, 1999, at Chan Chich Lodge near Gallon Jug, Belize. The bird was taking advantage of an abundant supply of oranges near our cabana. The bird would poke a hole into the orange then return to lap up the juice with its long tongue. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 300mm F2.8 L lens and 2X extender and flash on Fuji Velvia film.
