The Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani) is a resident along the Pacific coast of the United States, Canada and Mexico. This species is extremely similar to the Blackish Oystercatcher of southern South America, but their ranges do not overlap. The bird at left was photographed in Pacific Grove, Monterey Co., California, in September, 1990 with a Canon T-90 and a FD 400mm F/5.6 lens. The bird below was photographed in June, 1999, at Port Angeles, Clallam Co., Washington with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Sensia.
