The Brewer's Sparrow (Spizella
breweri) breeds in the northwestern U.S. as well
as parts of Canada and Alaska. The species winters commonly in
grass and brush habitats in the southwestern U.S. and Mexico.
At times it can be found on the wintering grounds in very large
flocks. The photo on the left was taken from a vehicle window
with a hand-held Canon T-90 and a FD 400 mm F 4.5 lens with a
1.4X extender on Fuji Sensia 100 in Jeff Davis Co., Texas in
December, 1995. The below photo, which shows the characteristic
dark lines on the crown, was taken in Las Cruces, Dona Ana Co.,
New Mexico in December, 1989, with the same equipment but with
Kodachrome 200.
