The Broad-tailed Hummingbird (Selasphorus platycercus) occurs in the Rocky Mountains of the southwestern United States southward into Mexico and Guatemala. Males of this species have characteristic whistling noise created by their wings while in flight. The female on the left is sitting on a nest and was photographed in the Davis Mountains of West Texas in June, 1999, with a Canon EOS1N and a Canon EF 300mm F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender and a flash on Fuji Velvia pushed one stop. The next shot is of another female, also in the Davis Mountains of Texas, in September 2001. It ws shot with the same lens but the camera was a Canon EOS 3.

The male Broad-tailed Hummingbird on the left was photographed in Breckenridge, Summit Co., Colorado, in June, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
