The Canyon Rubyspot (Hetaerina vulnerata) is a damselfly of the extreme s.w. United States in parts of New Mexico and Arizona. There are a couple of old Texas records as well. The species ranges south through Mexico into Guetamala and Honduras. The top shot shows a male which was perched on a rock in a ca. 10-acre clearing near a stream in the cloud forest of El Triunfo, Chiapas, Mexico, in March 2005. The photo was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300 mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash

Below are two more more shots (of a male, above, and a young female, below) which were taken on the Blue River, San Carlos Indian Reservation, Gila Co., Arizona, in April, 2005 with the same equipment as above.

The female Canyon Rubyspot on the left was found along Bonita Creek, Graham Co., Arizona, in May, 2008. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. Interestingly, this individual appears to have only 3 legs.

The male in the shot on the left as well as the female below were both at the same location as the female above.
