The Charles Mockingbird
(Nesomimus trifasciatus) is one of the rarest
birds in the world. Only 40 to 60 individuals are thought to
survive on tiny Champion Island in the Galapagos. Visitors are
not allowed to land on the island but approach by small boat
or zodiac is possible. The shots on this page were digital captures
taken in July 2003 from a zodiac in a small cove about 25 feet
from the land where we had several Charles Mockingbirds investigating
rock crevices near the shore. These two digital shots were taken
in July 2003 with a Canon EOS 10D and an EF 70-200 mm F/2.8 L
IS lens and 2X extender.
