The Chestnut-collared Longspur (Calcarius ornatus) is a breeding species of the prairie grasslands from north-central Colorado northward through much of Wyoming, the Dakotas and Montana as well as parts of south-central Canada. The species winters, sometimes in huge flocks, in the south-central United States. The territorial male birds in the next batch of images on the left were photographed at the Pawnee National Grasslands, Weld Co., Colorado, in June, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. Scroll down for more shots.

The female Chestnut-collared Longspur on the left was staying close to one of the males above.

The next 3 shots on the left show a Chestnut-collared Longspur at Medicine Lake N.W.R., Sheridan Co., Montana, also in June, 2007. These shots were taken with the same gear as described above.
