The Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus) is a widespread nocturnal species of open woodland, river edges, plantations, and other semi-open habitat over much of Central and South America. This species perches motionless by day, often appearing to be part of a tree limb. At night, the bird makes frequent sallies into the air to catch flying insects in its huge mouth. The bird sown here was perched on a limb along the Rio Napo, Departmento de Loreto, Peru, in July, 2006. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300 mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash. This bird was on this same perch for 4 days in a row, and may have used this perch for many months or more.
