The Dancing Jewel (Platycypha caligata) is certainly one of the most beautiful damselflies I have ever seen. The species occurs from east and central Africa southward into southern South Africa. It inhabits flowing wooded streams often perching in sunny spots. The outside of the lower legs of the male are red while the insides are white. The three shots of males and the two shots of females were all taken in January, 2006, in the Blyde River Canyon, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
