The Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) is a widespread species across much of North America. The "double-crest" is a feature sometimes seen during the breeding season, but the character is not readily visible most of the year. This species is a very expert swimmer and quite adept at catching fish under water. The individual shown at left was drying its wings on Sanibel Island, Lee Co., Florida, in November, 2006. The shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.

The Double-crested Cormorant immediately below was swimming in a small pond in Kenedy Co., Texas during March, 2000. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 600mm F/4 L lens on Fuji Provia film.

The four shots of Double-crested Cormorants in flight on the left were taken from a boat while I was under a nesting rookery of these birds. The birds in the images here were approaching or landing at the rookery. These shots were taken at Lake Tohopekaliga, Osceola Co., Florida, in February, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.

The winter plumaged Double-crested Cormorant on the left was swimming along Barton Creek in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in December, 2007. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 40D and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens.
