The Elk (Cervus elaphus) is fairly common in many areas of the western United States. Formerly, it was more widespread and common, but the species is still holding its own in many areas where it occurs. The young bull shown here was at Fort Niobrara N.W.R., in Cherry Co., Nebraska, in June, 2001. The animal was still in velvet and was foraging in deep grass on the back side of a small hill. The animal kept peering at me over the top of the grass at the brow of the hill and offered these interesting shots with the soft, out-of-focus grass in the lower portion of the images. I will add more Elk shots when I can.
