The European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster) breeds in southern Europe and parts of northern Africa. It winters in southern Africa and parts of India. In the breeding season the species is quite gregarious and is sometimes found in large groups. This same characteristic may also apply during migration and on the wintering grounds. The shots here show a single wintering bird in Kruger National Park, South Africa in January, 2006. They were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II & EF 500mm F/4L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
