The European Roller (Coracias garrulus) breeds in parts of southern and eastern Europe and winters in southern Africa. In the breeding season the species is stunningly beautiful, but in the winter is can appear far duller. The shots here show a single wintering bird in Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa in January, 2006. The images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II & EF 500mm F/4L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
