The Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) is widespread across the eastern half of the United States. There are also isolated records in the west. The individual shown in the top three shots was a singing male near Austin, Travis Co., Texas in May, 2005. The photos were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and an EF 600mm F/4L IS lens with a 2X extender. Next is a wintering bird near Buffalo Gap, Taylor Co., Texas, in December, 2005. It was shot with the same digital camera and lens as above.

Perhaps one of the most common views of a Field Sparrow is to see one perched on a fence wire along a roadside. This one was in Kenedy Co., Texas in January, 2000. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 600mm F/4 L lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Provia film.

The next two shots below were also in Kenedy Co., Texas, in January, 2000, and were taken with the same equipment as the shot above.
