The Fragile Forktail (Ischnura posita) is a tiny green and black damselfly of slow streams and quiet ponds and marshes in the eastern U.S. The photos below are digital captures at Balcones Canyonlands NWR, Burnet Co., Texas in July 2003, and were shot with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 180 mm F/3.5 Macro lens with a ring flash. Note the "exclamation point" marking on the back of the thorax, one of the field characters of this species.

The pair of Fragile Forktails in copula on the left was at Pond Creek N.W.R., Sevier Co., Arkansas, in September, 2007. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 180mm F/3.5 Macro and 1.4X extender and macro flash.
