The Galapagos Tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus), also known as Giant Tortoise, lives only on the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. There have been 14 different subspecies described, but apparently only 11 of these survive today. The subspecies on each island have different characteristics about their shell and foraging method, so that a knowledgeable person can tell what island a particular tortoise comes from just by seeing the shell. The shots here were taken on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos in July, 2003, with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens.
