The Galapagos Heron (Butorides
sundevalli) is another species endemic to the Galapagos Islands. It is also known as Lava Heron. It is closely related to the Green Heron more familiar to North American observers and shares similar behavior. The top 2 shots on this page were digital captures taken in July 2003 on James Island with a Canon EOS 10D and an EF 70-200 mm F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender. The 2nd shot shows an immature individual with considerable buffy or rufous feathers visible on the wing; in the adult these are all gray.
The image on the left shows a Galapagos Heron on Santa Cruz Island in July, 2007. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 L lens.
