The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is a common and widespread species of the western hemisphere. It occurs from the arctic areas southward to southern South America. The shot shown here was taken in Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co., Texas, in August 1986. It was a windy day, and the ear tuffs, or "horns" were blowing to one side. Great Horned Owls are powerful predators and are known to prey on a wide variety of small animals. This shot was taken with a Canon T-90 and a Canon 400mm F/5.6 lens on Fuji Sensia.
