The Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is a world-wide species which is locally distributed in many areas. It occurs in the extreme eastern United States with a few wandering west to Texas in some seasons. There have been a number of papers written in recent years about separating the species from the similar White-faced Ibis (P. chihi) since in all but high breeding plumage they can be difficult to tell apart. The reader is referred to many such published accounts if interested. The breeding plumaged adult Glossy Ibis on the left was at Anahuac N.W.R., Chambers Co., Texas, in April, 1996, and was photographed with a Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F/4.5 lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Sensia. The immature Glossy Ibises in the next shot were photographed in March, 1997, at the Kennedy Space Center, Brevard Co., Florida, with a canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/5.6 lens on Fuji Sensia. |
