The Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) breeds in meadows, pastures, fields, and various grasslands across much of the United States. It has a distinctive insect-like buzz for a song, but can easily be overlooked by those unfamiliar with its voice. The three shots of the singing bird on this page were taken at Fort Niobrara NWR., in Cherry Co., Nebraska in June, 2001, with a Canon EOS 3 and an EF 500 mm F/4L IS lens with a 2X extender on Fuji Velvia. The shot immediately below with the tan background is an image of a wintering bird in Kenedy Co., Texas, in February, 2000. The shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 600mm F4 L IS lens with a 1.4X extender on Fuji Velvia.

The next nine images of Grasshopper Sparrows are all digital captures with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender in June, 2007, at Medicine Lake N.W.R., Sheridan Co., Montana. A number of these shots show singing birds.
