The Grayish Mourner (Rhytipterna simplex) occurs in the forests of South America, mainly east of the Andes, from Venezuela and Columbia to areas of Brazil and Bolivia. The species often stays high in the canopy of tall rainforest and can be quite difficult to photograph. The shots here were taken about 120 feet above the forest floor along a canopy walkway at the Amazon Conservatory for Tropical Studies (ACTS), near the Rio Napo, Departmento de Loreto, Peru, in July, 2006. The images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500 mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender. From what I can determine, there are very few photos of this species in the wild.
