The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is one of the most familiar wading birds in North America. It breeds across most of the United States and Canada and ranges southward well into Mexico. The species may also be found on the Galapagos Islands and the Caribbean. The bird at left was at Port Aransas, Nueces Co., Texas, in December, 1994, and was photographed with a Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F/4.5 lens on Kodachrome 200. |

The Great Blue Heron seen in flight below was on West Galveston Island, Galveston Co., Texas, in September,
1999, and was photographed with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F/2.8 L lens and 2X extender on Fuji Sensia.

The below images were taken in November, 2005, in Venice, Sarasota Co., Florida at a nesting site of Great Blue Herons. The images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4 X extender.

The pair below took a break from their nest building activities to give me a nice pose.

The two shots just below show some courtship posturing by a Great Blue Heron.

The next shot was taken of a Great Blue Heron at Aransas N.W.R., Aransas Co., Texas, in November, 2006, with the same equipment as above.

The Great Blue Heron image below was captured with a Canon EOS 1d Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens as the bird flew along the edge of the Quintana Jetty in Brazoria Co., Texas, in December, 2006.

The Great Blue Heron on the left was at Lake Tohopekaliga, Osceola Co., Florida, in February, 2007. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens. Note the way the wind is blowing the feathers of the bird's neck, just below the head, into a "cobra-like" fan.
