The Green Heron (Butorides virescens) is a widespread, small heron which is found in both salt-water and fresh-water marshes, ponds and other wet areas. It was formerly known as Green-backed Heron. It is most common in the eastern United States, but is found in many areas of the west as well. The immature bird on the left was fishing from an exposed perch in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in July, 1999, and was shot with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 600mm F/4 L lens on Fuji Sensia. The adult immediately below was photographed in Kenedy Co., Texas, in April, 2000, with the same gear but on Fuji Velvia.
The adult below, sitting on a nest, was at Anahuac N.W.R., Chambers Co., Texas, in March, 2001 and was photographed with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 600mm F/4 L lens on Fuji Sensia. The shot below of the adult standing and facing to the right was also at Anahuac in March, 2001.

The adult Green Heron below was standing along the edge of a small pont in Fort Myers, Lee Co., Florida, in November, 2006. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.

The young Green Herons in the next two shots were at Anahuac N.W.R., Chambers Co., Texas, in June, 2008. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
