The Gray Vireo (Vireo vicinior) is a drab, but characteristic bird of brushy canyons in parts of west Texas. It occurs in Texas as far east as Kinney and Edwards Counties, but most observations are in the Trans-Pecos area. Outside of Texas it is basically a southwestern speciality occurring in parts of New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and California. The two photos immediately below of a Gray Vireo were taken in June, 1998, in Crockett Co., Texas. This is an adult bird in worn summer plumage; the wingbars have mostly abraded away by this time of year. The photos were taken with a Canon T-90 camera with a Sigma 500 mm F4.5 lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji 100 Sensia. The camera and lens were mounted on a tripod. 



The below four shots are digital captures and were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. These shots were taken in June, 2005, near Ozona, Crockett Co., Texas. Like the bird above, this individual is in worn plumage.
