The Halloween Pennant (Celithemis eponina) is a medium sized dragonfly which occurs across most of the eastern U.S. It is a striking dragonfly, one of the most beautiful in the country; is hard to misidentify with its orange and black wings. The above shot, of a male, was a digital capture in June 2003 in Austin, Travis Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 300mm F4L IS lens. It was fairly windy, and the dragon was opening and closing its wings in an effort to retain its perch. Most of my shots were poor due to the wind, but I got a few nice ones like this. The below shot, a female, was shot at the same location and with the same equipment in May, 2003.

The female Halloween Pennant below was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in June, 2003.

The male Halloween Pennant in the next two shots on the left was at Austin, Travis Co, Texas, in May, 2007. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.

The next two shots of Halloween Pennants were taken at Millwood Lake, Howard Co., Arkansas, in September, 2007, with the same gear as above.
