These robber flies are known as Heteropogon patruelis and were photographed at Falcon State Park, Zapata Co., Texas in October 2004 with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and an EF 300 mm F/4L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash. Most of the state park is in Starr Co. (where the species was also observed), but these shots were in a part of the park within Zapata Co. My thanks to Eric Fisher and Michael Thomas for identifying this insect from these photos. Several specimens were collected in nearby Starr County for researchers. Thanks also to Herschel Raney and Rob Cannings for their help with these robbers.
