King
Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus). Standing
three-feet tall and weighing approximately 35-40 pounds, King
Penguins are second in size only to the Emperor Penguin (A.
forsteri). These are highly social birds that nest in huge colonies on the island of South Georgia and on a number of other sub-antarctic islands. Some of the colonies are known to number 100,000 birds or more. The first set of images here were all taken at Gold Harbor, South Georgia, in January, 2003, with a Canon D60 and EF 70-200 F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender. I will note in the captions below when the images are from another trip.

One of the most spectacular experiences in the natural world is to visit a large King Penguin colony such as the one at Gold Harbor, South Georgia.
