The robber fly below is known as Lamyra gulo. This robber was photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and an EF 300 mm F/4L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash in January, 2006, at the Polokwane Nature Reserve near Pietersburg, Limpopo Province, South Africa. It was a very large, flashy robber, and I was only able to get a few shots from this angle, then it flew off and could not be found again. Torsten immediately recognized the species from his studies of this group of robber flies.
