The Least Sandpiper (Calidris minutilla) breeds widely across northern Canada and Alaska and winters across the southern United States and Mexico. It can be one of our most abundant shorebirds. The bird at right was a migrant along the Texas coast in Jefferson Co., in May, 2001. The photo was taken with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Velvia.
The Least Sandpiper at right, a wintering bird in basic plumage, was digitally photographed in March, 2004, at Bolivar Flats, Galveston Co., Texas, with a Canon 10D and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens.
The two below shots, of a wintering Least Sandpiper, were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in December, 2004,
with a Canon EOS 1 D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.

The Least Sandpipers in the next 3 shots were spring migrants in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in April, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.

The Least Sandpiper in the next two shots was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in May, 2008. These images were taken with the same gear as the shots just above. In the 2nd shot the sandpiper has just captured some sort of worm.
