The Lilypad Forktail (Ischnura kellicotti) occurs across much of the eastern U.S., reaching its western distribution in east Texas but a few isolated records exist in north-central Texas as well. The species apparently is only found where lilypads are present and it is upon these pads where they typically perch. The blue form and orange form females shown here were photographed in July 2004 on a small pond in Uncertain, Harrison Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 180 mm F/3.5 macro lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash. I was not able to get any useable shots of a male but hope to add some in the future. The drooping tip to the abdomen is characteristic of the species.
