The Lineated Woodpecker (Dryocopus lineatus) occurs from Mexico southward into parts of Argentina. It Mexico, it occupies a variety of habitats from extensive forests to farm edges and scattered woodland. It is a large woodpecker and quite conspicuous. The Lineated Woodpecker shown in the top 3 shots here was photographed in December, 2004, in southern Tamaulipas, Mexico. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and a 600 mm F/4 L IS lens. The wind was blowing fairly strongly when I took the shot on the right so the bird's crest was blown backwards, giving it a "bad hair day". The 4th shot was taken in the same location, but in May, 2007.
