The Magellanic
Oystercatcher (Haematopus leucopodus) occurs
in southern Chile, Argentina, and the Falklands. It is superficially
similar to the American Oystercatcher (Haematopuspalliatus),
more familiar to North American observers, but is blacker backed
and shows a yellow rather than a red eye-ring. This bird was
photographed on Bleaker Island in the Falklands in January, 1996,
with a Canon T-90 & FD 400mm F4.5 lens mounted on a tripod
with Fuji Sensia 100 film. This bird was close by a juvenal which
can be seen in the below photo.
This is a juvenal Magellanic Oystercatcher photographed
at the same time and place as the above photo, Note the buffy
feather tips across the back and wings and the small bill of
this young bird.
