The Marine Iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is only found on the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. This animal is highly specialized and lives on volcanic rock and sandy beaches of the islands. As the name implies, it swims freely in the cold ocean waters. The top 10 shots here just show a small collection of images of this reptile taken in July, 2003 on various islands in the Galapagos. All shots were with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens. These iguana can be differently colored from one island to another, but are mainly gray. They are larger on some islands than others as well. The 2nd shot shows a large group of iguanas basking in the sun on the dark lava rock; look closely in the bottom half of the image and you should see these guys. Shots below show various groups of iguanas, some close-ups of individuals, details of a rear foot and one shot shows a Lava Lizard (Microlophus spp.) resting on the head of a Marine Iguana. |
