The Mew Gull (Larus canus) breeds across Alaska and most of northern and western Canada; it winters on the Pacific coast down to Baja, Mexico. Like many gulls, this species is prone to wander, and individuals have been documented across the United States all the way to the Atlantic seaboard. It is a small, round-headed gull, with a rather small bill. The young Mew Gull shown here was standing in a parking lot near the coast at San Simeon, San Luis Obispo Co., California, in September, 1997. It was photographed with a Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F/4.5 lens on Fuji Sensia. |
