Mexican Prarie Dog (Cynomys mexicanus) These marginal quality photos were taken in October, 1990 (top 2), and June, 1994 (bottom 2) near the village of Tanque de Emergencia. Coahuila, Mexico. This location is about 50 miles NE of Saltillo, Mexico. At the time I thought these were Black-tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) but I have recently learned they are, in fact, Mexican Prairie Dog (C. mexicanus). There are several studies of this species going on at present since it seems to be disappearing from much of its former habitat. These shots were taken with a Canon T-90 and a 400mm F/4.5 Canon lens.
