The Mottled Owl (Ciccaba virgata) ranges from Mexico to northern Argentina. There is one record of the species in South Texas. It is often a fairly common owl of mixed forest, woodland edges, and riparian areas. The bird shown here was photographed in December, 1999, at Chan Chich Lodge near Gallon Jug, Belize. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 300mm F2.8 L lens and 2X extender and flash on Fuji Velvia film.
