This robber fly is Neoitamus flavofemoratus and was digitally photographed in July, 2005, near White Lake, Lanark Co., Ontario, Canada, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash. I was trying to get some photos of a dragonfly when this robber landed on a nearby leaf. I got only this one image before it left. My thanks to Michael Thomas for making an identification from the photo. Mike informs me that the species has been documented from Quebec south to Florida.
