The Orange Emperor (Anax speratus) occurs from some areas of west, east and central Africa into South Africa. It is a large and conspicuous Anax which may be frequently seen flying, but seldom perching. The female in the photo on the left was found ovipositing in the Blyde River Canyon, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa in January, 2006. The photo was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender with a 580 flash. On this same trip we saw many dozens of flying males but I was never able to get a shot of one.
