The Plain Chachalaca (Ortalis vetula) is member of the guan family which ranges from extreme south Texas southward to Costa Rica. It is very elusive and hard to find in areas of the tropics where it is hunted, but in south Texas in many refuges and parks it is common and easy to see. The top two shots on the left were taken at Bentsen State Park, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in February 1999. The next four shots were taken in Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in October, 1999. These six images were all taken with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F/2.8 L lens on Fuji Provia film.
