The Purple-throated Carib (Eulampis jugularis) is an attractive resident of the Lesser Antilles. It is a large, dark hummingbird which can be somewhat difficult to photograph (at least for me!) since it often stays in the shade. The throat of this bird glows a deep purple when the light hits it just right. The four shots shown here were taken on the island of Saba in the Lesser Antilles in July, 2001, with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500 mm F4L IS lens on Fuji Velvia. The stunning color of the throat is especially evident in the shot of the bird scratching himself.
