The Nomad (Sympetrum fonscolombii) is also known as Red-veined Darter. It is a very widespread Old World dragonfly occurring across much of Europe, Asia, the Indian Ocean and Africa. The shot of a male on the left was taken near Dullstroom, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa in January, 2006, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender with a 580 flash. See below for a shot of this species I took in 2002 in Spain.

In August 2002, I was on a family vacation in Spain. Although neither bird nor dragonfly photography was the focus of the trip, I was able to take a few wildlife photos. This Nomad or Red-veined Darter was on the edge of the beach near thousands of swimmers on a sunny August day in Santander on Spain's north coast. The Nomad or Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) photo shown here was taken with a Canon EOS 1V and 300 mm F4 L IS lens and 2x extender on Fuji Velvia.
