The Roseate Spoonbill (Ajaia ajaja) is a fairly common resident of the Gulf of Mexico coastal regions of the United States; the species also occurs as far south as Argentina and can be found in the Caribbean region as well. Its odd spoon-shaped bill is very effective when feeding in shallow water as the bird sweeps its bill back and forth straining out the tiny prey items it forages on. The birds on the upper left side of this page were at a rookery in High Island, Galveston Co., Texas, in March, 2004, and were photographed with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender. All the rest of the images are from the same location in April, 1999 and April, 2001, and were all shot with either a canon EOS 1N or EOS 3 and EF 600mm F/4 L lens on Fuji Velvia.
